Get to Know Us!

Indonesia generates millions of tons of mismanaged plastic waste annually, and coastal communities like Cilincing and Tanjung Priok in North Jakarta bear the heaviest burden — our research found a 69.6× higher odds of disease vector breeding sites linked to plastic accumulation, with 57% of plastic waste clogging drainage and 47% openly burned, directly threatening public health. As BUMI Health Catalyst (BHC), a youth-led spatial epidemiology research group and policy incubator from Universitas Indonesia, we combine GIS-based environmental health research with grassroots action. Our solution, “PLASTI-CARE,” establishes Waste-to-Wellness Hubs through the existing Posyandu (community health post) network, using a Health Credits system to incentivize residents to collect and properly dispose of plastic waste in exchange for health services and essentials. By linking circular economy principles directly to community health infrastructure, we aim to reduce vector-borne disease risk, empower local Kader Posyandu as environmental health champions, and build a replicable model for coastal communities across ASEAN.
