SalaSara Team Learned to Make Plastic Bins and Donated to Sokham Temple in Tanmixay Village, Vientiane

Key takeaways

    1. Collaborative Design of Portable Waste Solutions: The SalaSara team worked collaboratively to design and create DIY plastic waste sorting bins that are simple to assemble, easy to transport, and suitable for use in various community settings.
    1. Hands-on Skill Building Through Practical Engagement: Through active, hands-on collaboration, volunteers learned the step-by-step process of constructing DIY waste sorting bins, gaining practical skills and confidence to replicate the bins independently at home or within their own communities.
    1. Low-Cost, Resource-Efficient Production Outcomes: The activity successfully produced six (6) functional DIY waste sorting bins using only three basic materials—plastic netting, steel wire, and wire cutters—demonstrating that effective waste-sorting infrastructure can be developed with minimal resources.

                Activities implemented

This small-scale, hands-on activity was conducted on 7 October 2025 at a Salasara team member’s home as a cost-efficient alternative to using a formal construction site for producing plastic waste sorting bins. The session ran from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM and focused on the practical assembly of durable, easy-to-transport bins using simple materials. By the end of the workshop, the team successfully completed six (6) plastic waste bins, demonstrating that functional waste-management infrastructure can be developed with minimal resources. These bins were later donated to Sok Kham Temple on 19 October 2025, supporting improved waste-sorting practices within the temple and surrounding community.

                  Outcome

                    Community Engagement

The activity actively engaged six (6) youth participants in a hands-on environmental action focused on practical waste solutions. Through direct involvement, participants developed a stronger connection to local plastic waste issues and gained a clearer understanding of the challenges faced in their community. The activity also helped form a small but highly motivated core group of youth who are interested in continuing their involvement in future environmental initiatives.

                    Knowledge and Skill Building

Participants gained practical knowledge on how to create simple plastic waste sorting bins using recycled and locally available materials, alongside a foundational understanding of waste separation and plastic management concepts. Beyond technical knowledge, the activity strengthened key soft skills, including teamwork, problem-solving, and eco-design through reuse. This combination of technical and interpersonal skill development empowered participants to apply what they learned in their daily lives and future community activities.

                    Data Collection

The activity also contributed to the collection of baseline information related to local plastic waste conditions, including the types of plastic waste commonly found and prevailing waste disposal behaviors within the area. Although small in scale, the data generated provides valuable insights that can support the planning of larger-scale activities and inform improvements to future community waste management systems.

                    Community Awareness

As a result of the activity, participants naturally assumed the role of peer messengers for plastic reduction, sharing their knowledge and experiences with family members and friends. This ripple effect helped raise awareness beyond the immediate participants and sparked informal conversations within the community about plastic waste, responsible disposal, and the importance of reducing plastic use at the household level.

                    Feedback

Volunteers reported a noticeable increase in their awareness of local plastic waste issues, particularly in understanding how simple, low-cost solutions can contribute to improved waste management. Many highlighted that the hands-on nature of the activity strengthened their practical skills, especially in creating DIY waste bins from reused materials, and helped them see plastic waste as a resource rather than solely as a problem.

Participants also expressed a stronger sense of motivation and personal involvement, noting that the small-group setting allowed them to engage more deeply in the activity. One volunteer shared, “This activity helped me understand plastic waste more clearly. I didn’t know we could reuse materials to make something useful like a waste bin.” Another participant reflected on the sense of contribution and pride gained from the experience, stating, “Even though we were a small group, I felt very involved. I learned new skills and also felt proud to contribute to my community.”

Overall, the feedback indicates that the activity was effective not only in building practical skills but also in fostering confidence, ownership, and continued interest in participating in future environmental actions.
