Get to Know Us!

We are a youth-led initiative committed to promoting environmental sustainability and community-based waste management in Laos. Our project, SalaSara, which translates to “a temple full of knowledge,” aims to transform temples into green community centers that foster environmental awareness and responsible waste practices.

Recognizing the central role of temples in Lao society—particularly during Buddhist holidays—we began by installing plastic collection cages within temple grounds. These are designated for non-reusable plastic waste such as used plastic bags and empty bottles. To encourage participation, we implemented a point-based reward system in which individuals receive stamp points based on the weight of the plastic they donate. Once contributors reach 2 to 3 kilograms, they can redeem their points for essential household items.

Collected plastic is sent to our recycling partner every two weeks. The materials are then upcycled into practical items such as keychains, cup holders, and small storage boxes. These products are sold to generate income, which is equally divided: half supports temple activities, and the remaining half is reinvested into the project to ensure its sustainability and expansion.
