Report: Program for Promoting Trade in Creative Industry “ASEAN Design Products Webinar”

ASEAN-Japan Centre (AJC) held the “ASEAN Design Products Webinar” under the Program for Promoting Trade in Creative Industry, on 29 and 31 March 2021, which was the first attempt to introduce the design products of ASEAN countries to Japan.

As a background to this event, the AJC launched the “Program for Promoting Trade in Creative Industry” to develop the creative industry in ASEAN countries, and implemented various activities since 2017. Specifically, in cooperation with the Japan Institute of Design Promotion (JDP), the AJC worked for various activities such as; judging the candidates for Good Design Award, supporting companies to be qualified for the Good Design Award, promoting ASEAN companies to access to the Japanese market, assisting counterpart government agencies in ASEAN countries to establish a national design center and a good design award system. Through this cooperation, a variety of products and services which have quality design, have been created. This webinar is the first attempt to introduce these products in ASEAN countries virtually to Japan.

Welcome Remarks by Mr. Masataka Fujita, the Secretary General of the ASEAN-Japan Centre

The four (4) webinars were started with an opening speech by the secretary general of the ASEAN-Japan Centre (AJC), Mr. Masataka Fujita. Mr. Fujita firstly presented AJC’s contribution to creative industries in ASEAN Member states. Then, he presented that the products to be presented were selected based on following criteria but not limited to; 1) The product solves the challenges of consumers, 2) The product contribute to creation of future products and services, 3) The product contributes to communities and environment, 4) The product contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Remarks by JDP

Remarks by Ms. Makiko Tsumura, Senior Manager, Japan Institute of Design Promotion

Following, remarks by the AJC, Ms. Makiko Tsumura, Senior Manager, Japan Institute of Design Promotion (JDP), gave remarks. She introduced the activities of JDP which include promotion of G-Mark, activities for establishing design award in ASEAN countries, and definition of Good Design. Good Design is based on not only color and shape of product, but also stories behind – how the products are produced, used in a sustainable way, and whether the product contributes to employment, economic development.

  1. Whether the presenters have business with Japan or intend to establish linkage between Japanese market.
  2. Whether the products can penetrate into Japanese market.
  3. Whether handcrafted products can be mass-produced.
  4. How presenters overcome obstacles which may arise when they export products to Japan.

Themes wanted for future webinar

Many participants responded that they want to participate in webinar whose theme is “Creative Industry Products / Services”. On the other hand, many of them are also interested in “introduction of prospective products in ASEAN countries to Japanese market” and “Digital industry in ASEAN countries”.

Countries interested by Japanese participants

Indonesia, Thailand, Myanmar and Vietnam are the countries which Japanese participants are most interested in, and would like to more businesses with.
