The ASEAN-Japan Centre (“Centre”) organized the Special Online Interview and One-on-One meetings with H.E. Jose C. Laurel V, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of the Philippines to Japan on February 9, 2021, as part of its Ambassador Lecture Series featuring certain ambassadors from the 10 ASEAN member states in Japan. The seminar was organized based on the Centre’s close ties with the Embassy of the Republic of the Philippines in Tokyo, and offered insights into Ambassador Laurel’s extensive business and diplomatic experiences and familial ties to Japan to the 100 participants who joined online.
In his interview, Ambassador Laurel V reflected on the Japan-Philippines bilateral relations through his father’s and grandfather’s experiences as the Ambassador to Japan from 1966 to 1971, and as the former Philippine President between 1943 and 1945, respectively. Having lived in Japan from his early years, he has been exposed to the Japanese society and culture, and he believes that a friendship based on mutual relations and care between Japan and the Philippines can greatly support the countries in their efforts to recover from the socio-economic impacts of the COVID-19.
During the question-and-answer session, Ambassador Laurel V answered the questions submitted by the participants in advance of this seminar and explained about the Philippines’ Build, Build, Build infrastructure programme and the soon-to-be implemented Philippine Corporate Recovery and Enterprise Tax Relief (CREATE) Act, both of which present business opportunities for Japanese companies interested in further engaging businesses in the Philippines.
The Centre will continue organizing the Ambassador Lecture Series going forward, and will invite Ambassadors of ASEAN counties to Japan to provide insights into their countries’ current developments. By doing so, the Centre aims to continuously exchange up-to-date information with respect to the latest economic trends and activities from their ASEAN countries.
