Responding to a request by the university, Mr. Vathouniyom Douangmala, Director of Tourism and Exchange Division, and Dr. Aung Moe Chai, Director of Trade and Investment Division of the AJC, gave lectures at the Saitama University on April 27 and May 11, 2017, respectively. Both lectures were participated in by some 50 students.

In the lecture titled “Integrating ASEAN Diversity: Towards Prosperous ASEAN Community”, Mr. Vathouniyom elaborated on the diversity of the ASEAN Member States and current states of the ASEAN integration, which was followed by introduction of the AJC’s activities to promote tourism as well as exchanges of persons between the ASEAN Member States and Japan. He also shared attractions of Lao People’s Democratic Republic, his home country, with the students.

On the other hand, Dr. Moe Chai gave a lecture on “Regional Economic Integration & Japan – Myanmar Economic Cooperation”.  He talked about the history and forms of regional economic integration and how the ASEAN has been integrated to the regional economy. Further, he briefed the students on the history of economic cooperation between Japan and his home country, Myanmar, based on his experience of having engaged in a number of Official Development Assistance (ODA) projects as a Myanmar Government official before he was seconded to the AJC.

Both Mr. Vathouniyom and Dr. Moe Chai seemed to be successful in enhancing students’ understanding on ASEAN as a whole as well as their home countries through the lectures, as they received many insightful comments from the students. The AJC continues organizing on-site lectures at universities that provide the youth with good opportunities to boost and stimulate their awareness on the ASEAN.
