“Nurturing the next generation of ASEAN-Japan Environmental Leaders” Summary 1. Introduction  The ASEAN-Japan Young Environmental Leaders Network (AJYELN) is a network of young regional champions in combating the plastic pollution crisis selected from the 10 ASEAN Member States and Japan. Organized by the ASEAN-Japan Centre, the network promotes youth-led solutions to the plastic pollution issue in the region. 2. Recruitment and selection  The ASEAN-Japan Centre launched the open recruitment from April to May 31, 2023. More than 140 applicants from ASEAN countries and Japan have applied for the program, and 11 teams composed of a total of 36 fellows were selected for each country. Report by AJYELN Japan Team (Nadeshiko Akita and Yayoi Nagashima)  About the WCPUTA The AJYELN Japan Fellows’ project, “WCPUTA” (Whoever Can Pick Up Trash Anytime) aims to eliminate hidden trash in the city of Hiroshima. The main purpose of the event was to make it a habit for citizens to pick up trash and to raise awareness about the trash problem in Hiroshima. Key Takeaways:  The workshop on plastic management took place on November 20-21 in Glad Tidings International School’s WTJ hall. The workshop was organized by Ho Ho Heroes with the support of E2STEM Education and Glad Tidings International School. Report by AJYELN Indonesia Fellows Introduction On December 20, 2023, Green Warriors organized an environmental activity in Kabupaten Gayo Lues during a high school soccer tournament. The event aimed to target the game audience to involve them in a cleanup initiative and raise awareness about the importance of proper waste disposal. The activity took place from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM local time and involved the participation of students from Seribu Bukit Public High School as well as the local community. AJYELN Indonesia Fellows Organized an Eco Art And Mini Craft Challenge with 212 Student Participants in SMA Negeri Seribu Bukit
From October 30 to November 10, 2023, SMA Negeri Seribu Bukit organized the Eco Art and Mini Craft competition. The evaluation of the artworks took place on November 11, 2023, involving the participation of 212 students from several year levels. AJYELN Indonesia Fellows Conducted a Socialization Event to Raise Awareness About the Importance of Combating Plastic Waste Among 273 High School Students in Aceh, Indonesia
The socialization activity to raise awareness among the younger generation about the importance of addressing plastic waste took place on October 20, 2023, at the auditorium of SMA Negeri Seribu Bukit, from 09:00 to 11:15. We invited external schools that have previously received our posters and extended invitations to teachers and all students in our school. The “AJYELN Indonesia Go to School” event on October 3, 2023, lasting from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, is a crucial effort to raise awareness about the issue of single-use plastics. We, as members of AJYELN, diligently visited 10 high schools (SMA) in Gayo Lues. Report by: Poonyaporn Intaphrom, AJYELN Thailand fellow  Key takeaways: ・Small actions towards environmental change: The vertical garden competition instilled creativity and initiative among the participating students, that sustainable environmental practices start with small changes.  After we had officially announced the top 3 winners on our Instagram page (@weg.official), we used our LINE Openchat to tell all the successful participants from the workshop about the Awards Ceremony for the best vertical gardens.   Our rewards for the top 3 winners are 1-year Canva Pro membership (1st prize), 4 buffet coupons (2nd prize), and a waste separation bin (3rd prize). AJYELN Thailand Fellow Held a Vertical Garden Competition at Chiang Mai University Demonstration School (CMUDS) on November 22
Report by: Poonyaporn Intaphrom, AJYELN Thailand fellow    After the success and completion of the vertical garden workshop in August 2023, we gave our participants a few months to prepare their own vertical gardens using used plastic water bottles and easy-to-find materials to decorate their gardens.   We announced the competition date and asked 4 CMUDS teachers majoring in science to be our esteemed judges on the competition date, November 22 2023.
